STILLNESS
(a song in Winter)
There is a Light in Zion
Where the saints abide, always;
Beyond the schemes of wicked men--
Beyond these heavy, hollow days.
God regards the heart, that flutters
For grace, and truth, and light;
His word cascades in crystals--
But dead men seek the night.
Silent trees, immense, bear witness, too
As snow sinks on bare limbs,
As we offer up through solemn drifts
Tender, sacred hymns.
Though dark devices men yet imagine
Saints render the word of life, apart
Seeds cast into a wasteland
With longing in the heart.
As ice cases over leaf and love,
Tears might almost drown the little birds;
No bells tolled for helpless babies--
Yet the God of Heaven heard.
Beyond death's cold clutch, the Lord is risen
Even as technology spatters stains;
Beyond the crush of men's devices
The Lord shall come again.
O be still and know that he is God
No matter what seems to be.
Beyond this pale and frozen world
His wings will carry thee.
